COMEDY: MEDINA PUTS NOT-SO-EVERYDAY EXPERIENCES TO WORK
By MATT WEITZ / The Dallas Morning News
ARLINGTON - The Latin comedy thing is undoubtedly hot; one of the signs of said heat is the steady upward rise of Joey Medina, who was one of the original stars of the movie The Original Latin Kings of Comedy.
Of course, most people can't recall much about the original three kings of the Nativity (besides that unpleasant bit about the rubber cigar), so Mr. Medina's breaking out with a DVD titled Latin Palooza is really pretty encouraging.
That stuff draws on his workaday experiences with subjects as diverse as terrorism ("There should be two lines; one for if you look like a terrorist, one for if you don't") and race relations ("No one ever invites Latinos to a potluck because first of all, we think there's gonna be pot, and then, instead of food, we bring five more really hungry guys"). Medina has enough personality to carry the show.
With a background that includes being a boxer and a policeman in the Bronx, Joey Medina's take on humor is earthy and real-world. That means lots of cussing and ribald material, but it also means that his sense of humor has an everyman appeal. And that helped him gain a slot in the troupe that made the Original Latin Kings of Comedy movie with hot Latino talents Cheech Marin, George Lopez and Paul Rodriguez. He's also just released his own take on the group-roster comedy film, the DVD Latin Palooza, which he MCs along with up-and-coming talents such as Alex Reymundo, Willie Barcena and Mike Robles. |
| "One of the funniest shows I ever seen. Whether you are Latino or not, you won't stop laughing. Joey Medina is one of the rising stars of comedy. Alex Reymundo, Willie Barcena, Mike Robles and Darren Carter also give standout performances." - Yahoo Review |
| "Laugh along with the hottest Latin-American comics in the country as host Joey Medina introduces four fresh-faced stand ups whose unique blend of mainstream comedy and urban sensibility will have audiences of all backgrounds howling with laughter." - Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide |
| OMG!!! I loved the Original Latin Kings of Comedy and I rented this one because of Joey Medina but it was so much better tahn I expected. All the guys were fantastic. I can't wait for this to come out on Comedy Central or HBO. It trully is universally funny and having a fellow white boy on the show was a great touch. Also the special features were almost as funny as the stand-up. I highly recommend this DVD. - Netflix Review |
